Today we learned all about our house crickets and much more! We have created a three chamber habitat that contains moist soil, dry sand and an exercise yard with structures for climbing and hiding.

This morning we went down to the media center to research the lifecycle of various animals. The students are working in pairs to put together a research paper and tech. project. Enjoy the video to find out what we are doing with geometry in 3rd grade math. In the afternoon, we began our tour of the Northeast Region of the US. Tomorrow we will be going on a train ride through the North east region. For many of us, this will be our first train ride….we are excited!!

Today we enjoyed watching our beetles emerge as darkling beetles. It happened right before our eyes and was amazing! We have several that pupating and we anticipate their arrival as beetles anyday. I am so proud of the students’ hard work today. I truly have the best class!

At noon, we watched President Obama take the oath of office at the west front of the US Capitol building. We saw him give the inaugural address, Poet Elizabeth Alexander read a poem, and the US Navy Band Sea Chanters perform the national anthem. Ask your child to share with you tonight the Time for Kids magazine that details the first few days of office for the Obama family! What an exciting time for our nation.

Today was fantastic in room 204! We enjoyed reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing today and were able to make some fantastic connections. We took our unit 3 social studies test on Moodle today. It was an open book/journal test.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday break!! I am happy to be back with my amazing class! The students enjoyed sharing all of their wonderful experiences with family and friends. The students did a great job of getting back into the swing of things. Today we learned about the ways the Native Americans, Latinos, Europeans Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans came to America and contributed to its growth and development. We will conclude our study of the peopling of the United States on Wednesday by writing a song that celebrates American diversity. We continued to learn about the adventures in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing today. We plan to conclude this wonderful literature study on Friday. This is one of my favorite novels.

Holiday Party…
Due to our snow day, the rescheduled time for the 3/4 classroom parties is this Friday, January 9th, from 12:30-1:30. You are welcome to join us for this magical event! Thank you.

Field Trip TOMORROW…
We will be going on a field trip to the Environmental Center tomorrow. We will be going outside so students should bring gloves, hats, coats and snow boots to school for this special event. We will leave school at 8:30 SHARP and return for lunch at 11:00! We will return to BCS in time for our regular lunch schedule.

I just wanted to let you know that I will be flying to Florida to spend the holidays with my family. My parents and my husband’s parents are in Florida and Georgia during the holidays. We will fly into Tampa and enjoy a few days. We will then drive to St. Simons Island, GA to visit with my parents! We are so fortunate to have this special family time! I will not be at school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Mrs. Robinson will be here with the children during my absence.

Our amazing parents have planned a great party for the kids on Friday. It is from 12:30-1:30pm and all are welcome to join and help out! I will look forward to seeing everyone after the break!

I handed out the Environmental Center Permission slip this week. We go to the Environmental Center on Tuesday, January 6th and it is one of my favorite trips! I take the kids for the morning and we always learn so much and have the best time. Mrs. Pepper directly relates everything we do to our science curriculum. The permission slips are due ASAP. Today was a wonderful Wednesday! I am so proud of our class. They won the first ever BCS Physical Education Sportsmanship Award!!! As the winners, our class picture is posted in the gym alongside the big Sportsmanship Award Banner, and it’s a really cute picture. We also have a traveling trophy in our classroom for the next 5 weeks. Afterwards, the award is given out again to one of the ¾ classes. Please enjoy our news video!

We had a Terrific Tuesday in room 204! After working really hard on our cursive writing, we read and discussed Sing to the Stars. During third grade math, we performed a coin-toss experiment to confirm that some outcomes are equally likely. Enjoy the video of our coin-toss experiments. This afternoon we applied the map skills that we learned using a physical map of the United States. Today we investigated longitude, latitude and the compass rose. At the end of the day we went to Gym and Eng. Tech. Have a great evening!

Today was a Marvelous Monday! This morning we learned all about the wonderful Thanksgiving events of our classmates. Several people are in the process of uploading these paragraphs to Moodle for all to see. Third graders learned all about map scales today and will practice using this amazing tool tonight. In social studies we began to explore regions of the United States and of BCS! Today we learned about the important elements of a map including the map key, scale, compass rose (cardinal and intermediate directions). Remember the social studies challenge is due on 12.12 and is an optional activity.
