As part of our prize for coming second in the Siemens "We Can Change the World" Challenge last year, Discovery Education hosted a school assembly. Dave Salmoni, large predator expert and host of Animal Planet came with some furry friends and tales of his adventures with animals. Welcome to MEAP Weeks! Every child in BCS is tested. 3rd graders take Reading and Math. 4th graders take Reading, Writing, and Math. When we test, the kids are in my room with half of our class--the grade not being tested during that block has a rotation of activities in the Media Center. Having 13-14 kids in the room allows us to proctor well and provides a calm environment for the kids.

Posted below is the schedule of who tests when:
• Tuesday, Oct. 12: Reading
• Wednesday, Oct. 13: Reading
• Thursday, Oct. 14: 4th grade Writing
• Tuesday, Oct. 19: Math
• Wednesday, Oct. 20: 4th grade Writing
• Make-up testing on all other days through Friday, October 29th for kids who were absent on the above days.

What should you do at home to help your child do well?
• Early bedtime--get at least 10 hours of sleep (which doctors recommend for kids this age every day anyway)
• Healthy, big breakfast (there is NO food allowed in MEAP rooms)
• Get to school on time--testing begins by 8:30 every day
• Do not take your child out of school for appointments

If you have any questions, please email me.

Next week starts the MEAP. Please do not have your child study! The best way to prepare is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, and get to school on time!!! Next week we are only testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. While the homework load may be lighter, it will still be there, so please continue checking the blog!

10/07/2010

What a thrilling Thursday we had in room 204! This morning we worked in our sound groups recording and making sounds with different size nails. We also made our own nail xylophone movie. In the afternoon, we used rulers to investigate how size affects sound. We also watched a video clip on the wiki to learn more about sounds and vibrations. Visit our wiki to see our awesome group investigations.

Friday the kids have no school and the staff will be in a professional development meeting all day, missing the kids! Enjoy the long weekend with your friends and family! I will miss you tomorrow!

This day was wonderful! This morning we worked really hard writing our final draft of the “Me You See”. Tomorrow we will finish writing and begin drawing our pictures for this story. In the afternoon we did an experiment on making sounds with nails. We placed a small, medium and large nail onto a sponge and tested our predictions of the sounds. We tapped each nail with a pencil and recorded the sounds in audacity. Tomorrow we will take pictures of the nails and will upload the sounds and pictures to our wiki to share with you. Tomorrow is our last swim day!

We are excited to receive our new headphones for recording and listening. We would like to store each child's headphone in a gallon size pastic bag inside of each individual cubby. We would so appreciate a donation of gallon size plastic bags for the storage of our headphones. If you can make a donation, please send these bags to school with your child anyday. Any brand of gallon bags will be appreciated. Thanks greatly!

We had a Fantastic Friday! We had two “traveling field trips” visit us from the Cranbrook Science Center (this is being paid for with some of the money that you are sending in for our upcoming field trip to Cranbrook). One of the topics was Economics (the kids will say Money!) and the other was the Scientific Method. The kids and I really enjoyed these presentations. We had a lot of fun! It will be nice to refer to them this year when both topics pop up in our curriculum! Enjoy the video posts of our traveling Cranbrook experiences today!
