This morning we began our study of Land in Water in the cool ¾ science lab. The students did an amazing job working with their group members. Today we focused on team jobs and the expectations that we have of each other in the lab. Afterwards, we began thinking about what we already know and want to learn about land and water. In the afternoon we reviewed the structure of a “perfect paragraph”. We learned that a paragraph is like a hamburger! You need a top bun, yummy condiments including details like lettuce, tomato and pickles, and a bottom bun. Ask your child to tell you the details of a top and bottom bun. We used our knowledge and wrote some amazing paragraphs detailing our weekend. The students worked so hard today and I am proud so proud of them.

Today was picture day! It was a fun way to start our day! Everyone looked great and I can’t wait to see the pictures when they get back to us! This morning we read a story called, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?” Ask your child what it means to fill someone’s bucket or to dip into someone’s bucket! Mrs. Frishman and I will be hanging “buckets” next week for the kids to fill. Ask your child how we are going to do this! It is a fabulous activity that we are going to try all year.

Soon we will be starting our first science unit on Land and Water. In order to do this, our class needs 9 2-liter bottles. The bottles must be clear and they must have a cap. If you can donate one, please send it in with your child! We also need 9 shoe boxes for this unit. If you can donate one, we would appreciate it. This is a wonderful unit and I thank you for your help in getting started!!!

If you have 30-40 minutes to volunteer before next Tuesday, please let me know! Mrs. Frishman and I need volunteers to help unpack our science kits for the Land and Water unit! I am also looking for a copy mom to help once a week anywhere from 20-40 minutes!

*Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle to class so he/she does not have to leave class when thirsty!

We had the most amazing second day of school! Your kids are the BEST! We began the day with a language Arts activity. Next, we watched a Back to School Brainpop movie clip and completed some writing and graphic organizer activities which involved the students in creating their own ‘All About Me’ newspaper. Some students may be asking at home tonight for photographs to use on their poster. Next was snack time followed by Math. Third graders received their student reference book for home. Keep this book at home for reference throughout the year. Please be aware that this SRB is an older addition than the math journal and Home Link book. Some of the page numbers are different than the ones mentioned in your math journal and home link book. However, most of the information is still the same and can be found using the table of contents or index.

After lunch, the student had D.E.A.R time and completed their planners. Co curricular classes today were Spanish followed by Swimming.

Good afternoon! Today was the best first day of school!!! Your kids are fabulous and I know I am going to enjoy them every single day of the year! Thank you everyone for such a nice first day!

Today was a day filled with directions and your kids were fabulous listeners! Please make sure your child has a “zip binder” to help keep him/her organized. If you are not sure what this is, email me and I can send you a picture!

Please be sure to ask them about the following things:

1. Planners: Your child received a planner today. We will write in it every day and it your child will ask you to sign it every day! Please make sure you sign it to show me that you are aware of the homework that was assigned and that it has been completed. There is one homework assignment for tonight!

2. Take Home Folders: Please ask your child to show you his/her blue folder. This should be kept in the zip binder and go back and forth with your child everyday!

3. In addition, there was a lot of other mail that went home today. Please ask your child for it. There is an important flyer for you called “Welcome to the 2009-2010 School Year at BCS!!!”

4. Ask your child about his/her buddy! Ask him/her why we have buddies!!!
