Welcome to MEAP Weeks! Every child in BCS is tested. 3rd graders take Reading and Math. 4th graders take Reading, Writing, and Math. When we test, the kids are in my room with half of our class--the grade not being tested during that block has a rotation of activities in the Media Center. Having 13-14 kids in the room allows us to proctor well and provides a calm environment for the kids.
Posted below is the schedule of who tests when:
• Tuesday, Oct. 12: Reading
• Wednesday, Oct. 13: Reading
• Thursday, Oct. 14: 4th grade Writing
• Tuesday, Oct. 19: Math
• Wednesday, Oct. 20: 4th grade Writing
• Make-up testing on all other days through Friday, October 29th for kids who were absent on the above days.
What should you do at home to help your child do well?
• Early bedtime--get at least 10 hours of sleep (which doctors recommend for kids this age every day anyway)
• Healthy, big breakfast (there is NO food allowed in MEAP rooms)
• Get to school on time--testing begins by 8:30 every day
• Do not take your child out of school for appointments
If you have any questions, please email me.

Next week starts the MEAP. Please do not have your child study! The best way to prepare is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, and get to school on time!!! Next week we are only testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. While the homework load may be lighter, it will still be there, so please continue checking the blog!

What a thrilling Thursday we had in room 204! This morning we worked in our sound groups recording and making sounds with different size nails. We also made our own nail xylophone movie. In the afternoon, we used rulers to investigate how size affects sound. We also watched a video clip on the wiki to learn more about sounds and vibrations. Visit our wiki to see our awesome group investigations.
Friday the kids have no school and the staff will be in a professional development meeting all day, missing the kids! Enjoy the long weekend with your friends and family! I will miss you tomorrow!
Please check your child's Blue Take Home Folder each day to check for mail, homework, and important information.

This day was wonderful! This morning we worked really hard writing our final draft of the “Me You See”. Tomorrow we will finish writing and begin drawing our pictures for this story. In the afternoon we did an experiment on making sounds with nails. We placed a small, medium and large nail onto a sponge and tested our predictions of the sounds. We tapped each nail with a pencil and recorded the sounds in audacity. Tomorrow we will take pictures of the nails and will upload the sounds and pictures to our wiki to share with you. Tomorrow is our last swim day!
We are excited to receive our new headphones for recording and listening. We would like to store each child's headphone in a gallon size pastic bag inside of each individual cubby. We would so appreciate a donation of gallon size plastic bags for the storage of our headphones. If you can make a donation, please send these bags to school with your child anyday. Any brand of gallon bags will be appreciated. Thanks greatly!
Please check your child's Blue Take Home Folder each day to check for mail, homework, and important information.

We had a Fantastic Friday! We had two “traveling field trips” visit us from the Cranbrook Science Center (this is being paid for with some of the money that you are sending in for our upcoming field trip to Cranbrook). One of the topics was Economics (the kids will say Money!) and the other was the Scientific Method. The kids and I really enjoyed these presentations. We had a lot of fun! It will be nice to refer to them this year when both topics pop up in our curriculum! Enjoy the video posts of our traveling Cranbrook experiences today!

WE had a Wonderful Wednesday in room 204! This morning we worked in partnerships to help each other “dig deeper” for details to share in our brainstorming for the “Me You See” draft. In the afternoon we began working with our group on script to convince the “Greenworld Music Company“ to use either the best conductor of sound in the new speakers they will be building. Tonight, please look for a field trip letter on bright orange paper. Tonight, please upload your summer tech project to your wiki portfolios rather than emailing them. You will put your tech project on your “science” page and title it “Summer Project”! If your project is not a tech project, you will bring this into the classroom to share. If you have a tech project, you will be sharing from your wiki portfolio page on Thursday. Today we enjoyed Spanish and Engage!

Today was a Terrific Tuesday inside of room 204! We had the best time reviewing our study of Maria Isabel this morning and working on our Me You See brainstorming. In the afternoon we took a moodle test on the story “My Name is Maria Isabel”. This was our first moodle test and Mr. Whitmer was there to help us navigate the site as well. You can access the test results at home! We also had some time to practice keyboarding. I taught the class how to upload their summer tech projects to the wiki today. I reviewed this today. Tonight, please upload your summer tech project to your wiki portfolios rather than emailing them. You will put your tech project on your “science” page and title it “Summer Project”! What a great day we had inside room 204! This morning we began our exploration of sound. The student mission was to record sounds from around the building. They chose sounds that you hear every day. We used Audacity and a laptop to record and then exported the sound clips as MP3s and post them on our wiki. Tomorrow we will see if our classmates can guess our mystery sounds! In the afternoon we began working on a fall district writing assignment and then went to Spanish and Engage.

Happy Constitution Day! I missed the kids so much yesterday! While I did learn a lot, it was hard to be away! This morning we learned about the importance of our Constitution. This afternoon we met with Mr. Whitmer and experimented with a program called “Audacity.” Ask your child about it! We will be using it a lot in our upcoming science unit on Sound!!! If you want to play with it, you can download it for free online! We also started bucket filling today. Ask your child to share the details of this with you. Have a great weekend…

We had a fantastic Friday in room 204! Today we went to the media center for orientation and book checkout! This afternoon we started working on our ALL ABOUT ME web! Students are using posters to tell “fun facts” about themselves. Students will want to bring in a picture of themselves (with anyone or alone) for the poster on Monday. We will be displaying these next week! Have a great weekend!

Today was a thrilling third day in room 204! I absolutely love this class. They are the most cooperative workers! This morning we had a blast creating our own Wordle. Ms. Llewellyn came in and helped us, too. We learned how to create a Wordle, take a screen shot, crop in word, copy into PPT and save as a JPEG. We also learned to print to the color printer. You will see our Wordle Posters on our lockers and wikis soon. In the afternoon, we started creating our own informational posters with our buddies. We also went to Eng. Tech and Swim today. Get ready for a fantastic Friday!
